On our Taste of Jamaica Farm Tour, we use lots of tomatoes on a daily basis. Tomatoes are used in our callaloo dishes and are often sliced fresh and served alongside meals for our guests. Our vegan and vegetarian guests especially enjoy this simple, fresh option straight from the farm.
For many years I have grown beefsteak tomatoes, which are perfect for slicing and serving fresh. However, this season I decided to try something new — San Marzano tomatoes.
I first read about this special tomato from a region in Italy where it is famous for its exceptional flavor. San Marzano tomatoes originated near Naples, Italy, in the volcanic soil surrounding Mount Vesuvius. The rich soil, warm climate, and traditional growing methods give these tomatoes their naturally sweet taste, low acidity, and deep tomato flavor.
San Marzano tomatoes became well known around the world because they are considered one of the best tomatoes for cooking, especially for sauces. Many authentic Italian pasta sauces and pizzas are made using San Marzano tomatoes.
Of course, I am not expecting the exact same flavor here in Jamaica. The soil and climate are different. But if I can come even close, it will be something special. I would be proud to tell our guests that they are enjoying San Marzano tomatoes grown right here on our farm in Jamaica.
For us, growing food is about sharing fresh flavors, experimenting with new crops, and giving our guests a true farm-to-table experience.
