One of the most rewarding parts of farming is watching nature recover, renew, and surprise you. Earlier this spring, I had to cut back our fig tree quite heavily because it had become overgrown and was no longer producing the way I hoped. At the time, it looked almost bare, and I honestly wondered how long it would take before it started showing signs of life again.
Now, just a short time later, the fig tree is springing back beautifully. Fresh green leaves are appearing across the branches, and to my excitement, small young figs are already beginning to form. It is always amazing to see how resilient fruit trees can be when given proper care, sunlight, and time to recover.
The fig tree has become one of the very first stops for visitors arriving at our farm tour in the hills above Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Many guests have never seen a fig tree growing naturally before, and some are surprised by the large leaves and the way the fruit develops directly from the branches. When figs are in season, guests may even get the chance to taste fresh ripe figs right from the tree — something very different from the dried figs most people are familiar with from supermarkets.
For us, the fig tree is more than just another fruit tree on the farm. It represents patience, renewal, and the beauty of growing food naturally. It also creates a wonderful opportunity for visitors to connect with nature and learn more about tropical fruit trees grown in Jamaica.
As the tree continues to recover and grow stronger, I am excited to see how much fruit it will produce over the coming months. Every new leaf and every small fig feels like a little success story unfolding right here on the farm.
Guests visiting our Jamaican farm and herbal garden tour can enjoy seeing the fig tree up close along with many other tropical fruit trees, medicinal herbs, and authentic farm experiences that make our countryside tours so special.
